Project: Hemingway Avenue, Templestowe

The original four room house on the site was built in 1875 for pioneering orchardist Richard Serpell using clay quarried from his land for the locally fired bricks. In 1883 the property was sold to the Jenkins family who owned the building until purchased by our client in 2014. By then the original farm had been subdivided and the property was surrounded by large modern houses. The property is included in the Heritage Overlay of the Manningham Planning Scheme and was subject to site specific design guidelines.

The building was in an extremely poor state of repair when Coleman Architects were commissioned to restore the original house and design an addition to provide contemporary living for a family of four. The addition was designed to relate to the form and materials of the original building whilst retaining a separate identity appropriate to the contemporary lifestyle of the owners. The new living areas were designed to take advantage of views to the Dandenong Ranges and to connect seamlessly to the garden at the rear of the house.
