Project: Napier Street, Fitzroy North

The owner of this single-fronted Victorian terrace house in Fitzroy North, provided Coleman Architects with the challenge of creating a three-bedroom house within the constraints of a small corner site within the Heritage Overlay of the Yarra Planning Scheme.

Our solution was to separate a new two-storey structure from the original building with a small light court which, combined with the enclosed court at the rear of the site and fully glazed doors to both spaces, will give the impression of a much bigger internal space than the small footprint allows. The exterior has been designed to reflect the pitched roof forms of the traditional buildings in the immediate area, but with an asymmetric composition and contemporary materials to define the new structure.
